That’s right, XXL has finally made the announcement that all hip-hop devotees have been waiting to hear. The renown music publication is proud to present to you their 9th official Freshman issue and the 2016 XXL Freshman Class! It’s a new year with a new crew of future artists who will rise to the occasion to be, what XXL claims will be the next hip-hop superstars.
Watch the video above for a behind-the-scenes look at the photoshoot for the cover.
This year’s grade has got a wide range of talented and unique individuals who have all brought something to the realms of the music industry. This year’s Freshmen include Oxnard, California’s Anderson .Paak; Atlanta’s 21 Savage; Pompano Beach, Florida’s Kodak Black; Philadelphia’s Lil Uzi Vert; Cheltenham Township, Pennsylvania’s Lil Dicky; Harlem’s Dave East; Carol City, Florida’s Denzel Curry; Brooklyn’s Desiigner; Chicago’s G Herbo and the 10th Spot winner, ATL’s Lil Yachty. A pretty extensive and dynamic squad, if you ask me! So many familiar faces, it will be hard to decide who will make it big, but as they all continue to put out more music and to develop their sounds, the fans can begin to give out their opinions.
So let’s welcome the newbies to the stand as we send off and wish our best to the graduating class of 2015. Members of past freshmen classes have included the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Chance the Rapper, Danny Brown and Future. So it is extremely high praise to be mentioned and chosen to take part in this group of starlings. Expectations and standards are high, and only some will make it to the top out of this already very fortunate group of 10. Watch out world, here comes a new fire to rage at the radios, the parties, the concerts, the events, and more! And here’s to a/the new heir(s) to take the throne(s)!
For the next six weeks, XXL is given the task of releasing these artists’ never-before-seen content covering and incorporating all areas of music, such freestyles, cyphers, solo and group interviews, so that the fans can get a little taste of each Freshman and their style. After all of this, on June 28th, the legitimate issue of the Freshman XXL magazine will be available, which will also be the same day as the XXL Freshman Show at New York City’s PlayStation Theater.

The XXL Summer 2016 issue has more in store for you though, so don’t go anywhere! The magazine is also said to include a blast from the past, looking back at last year’s Freshman Class, while also providing an in-depth interview with Chicago’s former “next big thing,” Bump J, who is in the midst of wrapping up a six and a half year bid prison bid. In addition, Raury, Dizzy Wright and Joey Bada$$ all discuss Don Ruiz Miguel’s best-selling self-help book, The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom, and how it actually impacted their lives personally. Mike Tyson is also included in this issue’s publication as he reflects on his thoughts of hip-hop today versus the former days with Tupac Shakur. Lastly, the source gives you a sneak-peek at how U.K.’s grime scene is infiltrating U.S.’s genres, especially hip-hop.
In other rapper news, Post Malone got in a heavy discussion with the Editor-In-Chief of XXL when he wasn’t drafted for the “Freshman” cover. Find out what happened here.
