“They say misery loves company / No I don’t.”
This is what “Layers” by Royce Da 5’9″ bellows in its lyrics as the song flows to a steady rhythm against a dope beat and some tight verses spat by none other than Royce, G.O.O.D. Music president Pusha T, and MMG leader Rick Ross. Follow the boys on this epic adventure of the rough and dangerous.
“First in science, first in technology, the wealthiest country on Earth, the most powerful country on earth, is 26th in education.”
The visual to the song takes you through back room deals to corrupt politicians and through heists and kidnaps.
The record is lined by samples of political lectures that are terribly incorrect while the Detroit rapper compares the many “layers” of the hip-hop industry to similar game of deceit that American politics encompasses. Featuring Pusha T and Rick Ross and paired with Royce’s BET Backroom freestyle from 2014 as PRhyme (Royce with DJ Premier) over clips of the preachings of Louis Farrakhan, Sr., the leader of the Nation of Islam, the track goes on. We’re still waiting for Royce’s new project, Book Of Ryan, but it seems like he decided to satiate us with this track in April until then, and now this Ryan Synder produced video. Guess we’ll be waiting a little longer for the Mr. Porter-produced project?
Royce continues to push the date of release further, but by far, this track is the most exciting collab off the album. This gritty visual is enticing, cinematic, and fantastic. Watch it all above.
We see impoverished communities getting their justice taken from them and we see robbery and political scandals all masked by blinding dark shades of color and dim lights. The whole environment is set in a dingy, grungy motel that the protagonist takes over so the mission can be completed. The whole cinematography of the video is actually quite stunning and quite vivid, a very impressive piece of work.
