Nas and Erykah Badu Move You In Joint-Single “This Bitter Land”

Life is like a test…

In this stunning new joint-single “This Bitter Land” released via Mass Appeal, and created for the forthcoming film The Land, rapper Nas and R&B/soul singer Erykah Badu create the most angelic and heart-breaking transcendence of sound. A few months back, we found that Nas was going to executively produce Badu’s motion picture and its accompanying soundtrack. The movie track list is going to be another star-heavy compilation of music consisting of artists such as Kanye West, Pusha T, French Montana, Jeremih, Badu and many more.

You can now listen to the song above. The Land is set to be released to theaters on July 29th, so be sure to catch it as soon as you can.

In this almost spoken-word-like tune, the two create one of the most chilling, hair-rising, and enchanting songs ever heard. It’s beautiful and intense as Badu channels her inner Nina Simone, moans, and croons her vocals into the depths of the strings playing acoustically. Nas then steps in aggressively, but light enough to only just touch above the volume of Badu’s voice, and slowly spits lines of emphatic purpose, representing the teenagers of the streets, trying to find themselves within the grunge and the destitute undergrounds of the city.

“It’s a test, life is like a test / Life is like a hood – hard / Trying not to fall between the cracks, and the cracks is so dark / And the dark seems more appealing than the light,” he raps.

The film takes you on a broken dream tour of four Cleveland teenagers who have dreams to become the next professional skateboarders, but with no means and the wrong kind of environment, they find themselves caught amidst a fatal drug deal and face the true terrors of being from the underground. The Land is an independent film, that has celebrities appear in its story such as Erykah Badu, Michael K. Williams (of the films The Wire, Boardwalk Empire), and Cleveland-bred rapper Machine Gun Kelly. It is directed by Steven Caple Jr. and as mentioned before, executive produced by Nas. The film recently received large recognition at its premier this year at the Sundance Music Festival.
