The Warner Bros. and DC Comics inspired motion picture Suicide Squad is just about ready to squad-up and unleash some of the worst heroes ever this Friday, August 5th! But most of all, it’s preparing you all for one of the illest soundtracks ever in movie history. Contributing to that killer roster of artists is none other than Kehlani who just dropped her new single for the movie “Gangsta.”
Like bullet shots, this R&B songstress is firing her ammo one single at a time, as they strike us with their impeccable musical stylings. Just last month, the pixie-cut goddess, Kehlani, released to us two of her newest singles, “CRZY” and “Distraction.” What is amazing is that all three of these records sound very different from one another, demonstrating this artist’s talent and creative range. She’s experimenting, which I think means we must be on the look out for a debut album coming soon?!
Yes, no, maybe so? In this track, “Gangsta,” you will be enchanted by the concept of gangsta’ lovin’ because this piece is H.O.T. It’s got the Bjork and Nancy Sinatra aura to it of being both eerie and melancholic, while still carrying that edge and fire that is Kehlani. The song is romantically haunting as Kehlani’s voice is paired with an ominous synth-bass instrumental and layers of warped vocals that coat her sounds with a sonic cloud of airiness.
She unleashed the single on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 Radio, when Lowe chose it to be his “World Record” of the day! Right after premiering the song, Lowe interviewed the director of the film, David Ayer, to discuss on the production and choice of this song for the film.
“I was a few bars in and I was like this is beast, this is gonna smash,” says the Suicide Squad visionary. Ayer further described the song, saying that “there was this sort of emotional quality to it,” he continues “this sort of raw, broken yet strong, haunting quality to it.” Ayer also explains his thoughts on the singer-songwriter herself. “She has a life, and she comes from some place … and she puts that into her music, and you can tell when an artist is really putting everything on the line.” And to him, this song in particular “blends into the fabric of the film.”
Kehlani has really been diversifying before our eyes as she continues to experiment and innovate with her own sound. She appears on the motion picture project amongst a team of other amazing artists on the soundtrack, such as Skrillex and Rick Ross’ “Purple Lamborghini,” and Twenty One Pilots’ “Heathens,” and the quintuplet hit “Sucker Punch” (featuring Lil Wayne, Logic, X Ambassadors, Ty Dolla $ign, and Imagine Dragons), and many more.
