Here come the girls
Warner Bros has a new project coming our way, and it’s going to be a starry-eyed take on a classic! Ocean’s 8 is the movie to look out for next year with a star-studded line-up including actresses, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling, Sandra Bullock, Awkwafina, Cate Blanchett, and songstress Rihanna! If you haven’t guessed it yet, the film is not your conventional Oceans films, instead of an all-male cast of charming, witty gentlemen based off of the 1960’s Rat Pack, we are getting an all-female cast, of sexy, intelligent women.
The revivification of the production is set to begin filming this October in New York City for this spin off of Gary Ross’s (2012, The Hunger Games) notorious American comedy-heist films! Of the new cast members, some may not know Awkwafina, so as a quick factual tid-bit, she’s a dope hip hop Asian-American rapper! But as an actress she goes by her original name Nora Lum. She has appeared in films before such as the recent release Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising with actors Zach Efron, Hailee Steinfeld, Chloë Grace Moretz, Rose Byrne, and Seth Rogen.
Everyone was stunned, however, when they heard that Rihanna, the R&B, Caribbean singer, would be involved with the film! She is emerging into the work of the film industry in ways such as her recent feature in Luc Besson’s Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.
Viewers were more excited when they heard there was a possibility of bringing on a few past performers from the original cinematic series which had included the likes of George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Andy García, and Julia Roberts. According to Deadline, the trilogy “grossed a collective $1.12 billion worldwide.” Ocean’s Eight has been reported to be produced by the Ocean’s Eleven director Steven Soderbergh alongside Ross, who had written the script with Olivia Milch.
Apparently, they are still casting as well, and so we should be expecting even more well-known names to come. Of course, we would expect nothing less from an Oceans film, since they have always been loaded with big leagues from the industry.
The Wrap learned from Slashfilm’s interview with the movie’s director that the film will be very much like the original series. “It’s a pretty similar tone. You know, Steven Soderbergh and I are incredibly close friends, and we would not have done this if we weren’t. I don’t think he would’ve wanted anyone to do it if we weren’t. This is very much an extension and a continuation,” Ross says.
What do you think? Are you excited? Stay tuned to find out more as the date and production nears.
